OPNsense 23 for aarch64

  • These experimental images are NOT official releases. It’s a proof of concept that OPNsense is workable for aarch64. Use at your own risk.
  • Since version 22, OPNsense is now based on FreeBSD 13. Therefore, all the devices on this wiki page shall all work under good development. Images for Raspberry Pi 4 and NanoPi R4S are built here.
  • The OPNsense-${VER}-vm-aarch64.vmdk image works for ESXi and QEMU.
  • The OPNsense-${VER}-arm-aarch64-RPI.img image works for Raspberry Pi 3b, 3b+ and 4b, while the OPNsense-${VER}-arm-aarch64-R4S.img image works for NanoPi R4S. See section 4 for details.
  • For NanoPi R6S, please see my steps to make the device running.

The OPNsense images for aarch64 are built on FreeBSD aarch64 using the tools1.

Please visit OPNsense forum2 if you encountered any problems. You can also create an issue if you believe I can help.

The default user name and password is root:opnsense for a fresh install.

You can use https://ftp.yrzr.tk/opnsense http://147.8.92.207/opnsense (update on 2024/03/28, the domain yrzr.tk is no longer used, see this post) as the repo URL to get almost all the plugins as if on AMD64 and the updates (however, I will not update the packages frequently).

Accept the fingerprint of my server from the shell:

1
curl http://147.8.92.207/opnsense/fingerprint -o /usr/local/etc/pkg/fingerprints/OPNsense/trusted/yrzr

Then modify the Mirror section in System/Firmware/Settings on WebUI to (other) and http://147.8.92.207/opnsense.

/images/opnsense-23-for-aarch64/mirror.png
Modify the Mirror section.

Check updates and then go to System/Firmware/Plugins to download the plugins you want.

/images/opnsense-23-for-aarch64/plugins.png
Plugins list.

You can also edit /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/OPNsense.conf as an alternative option:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
OPNsense: {
  fingerprints: "/usr/local/etc/pkg/fingerprints/OPNsense",
  url: "pkg+http://147.8.92.207/opnsense/${ABI}/23.X/latest",
  signature_type: "fingerprints",
  mirror_type: "srv",
  priority: 11,
  enabled: yes
}

PowerD is a daemon running on FreeBSD to enable CPU Scaling and power saving. By default, PowerD is installed but not enabled on OPNsense. You could enable PowerD to gain performance improvement.

/images/opnsense-23-for-aarch64/powerd.png
Enable PowerD.

Install xz-utils for .xz files:

1
xz -d OPNsense-*-aarch64*.*.xz

Install ESXi on RPI4 (4g or 8g version only) from the official website3. Then, convert the vmdk image from the shell of ESXi:

1
vmkfstools -i OPNsense-*-vm-aarch64.vmdk OPNsense-out.vmdk

You can also resize the virtual disk size as you want:

1
vmkfstools -X 32G OPNsense-out.vmdk

Finally, import the OPNsense-out.vmdk to your virtual machine as the boot disk and run.

Convert vmdk image to raw image:

1
qemu-img convert -f vmdk -O raw OPNsense-*-vm-aarch64.vmdk OPNsense-out.raw

Run virtual machine with KVM on aarch64 machines (RPI4 with 64-bit Raspbian OS, for example):

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
qemu-system-aarch64 \
  -bios /usr/share/qemu/edk2-aarch64-code.fd \
  -M virt,gic-version=max \
  -enable-kvm \
  -cpu host \
  -smp 1 \
  -m 1024M \
  -nographic \
  -drive format=raw,file=OPNsense-out.raw,cache=none,if=virtio

Or emulate from AMD64 machines:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
qemu-system-aarch64 \
  -bios /usr/share/qemu/edk2-aarch64-code.fd \
  -M virt,gic-version=max \
  -cpu cortex-a57 \
  -smp 4 \
  -m 1024M \
  -nographic \
  -drive format=raw,file=OPNsense-out.raw,cache=none,if=virtio

Don’t forget to add your network-related options, for example:

1
  -net nic,macaddr="11:22:33:44:55:66" -net bridge,br=br0

For more information, you can also refer to the FreeBSD wiki4.

  • The RPI images are built for aarch64. Therefore, RPIs with SoCs before BCM2837 will NOT be compatible.

The image writing process is trivial, so that you can refer to the official document of RPI 5.

Here is an example of writing to the disk under UNIX-like systems using the dd command.

1
sudo dd status=progress if=OPNsense-${VER}-arm-aarch64-{RPI,R4S}.img of=/dev/sdX bs=8M conv=fsync

Now you can insert the sd card into your device and power on it.

The config.txt in the first partition needs to be modified depending on the RPI model you get. There are also config_rpi*.txt files for your reference.

For example you are using an RPI4, insert the sd card to a linux machine:

1
2
3
4
5
mkdir -p /mnt/temp
mount /dev/sdX1 /mnt/temp
cp -v /mnt/temp/config_rpi4.txt /mnt/temp/config.txt
# here, edit /mnt/temp/config.txt as you wish
umount /mnt/temp

Additionally, you can append the following lines in config.txt to enable serial console (learn more about serial console here6):

1
2
3
# Fix mini UART input frequency, and setup/enable up the UART.
uart_2ndstage=1
enable_uart=1

After the system is booted, you will need to grow the root partition in the shell manually. Go to the console and type 8 to enter the shell, and excuse the following command.

1
service growfs onestart
